Horinka, Ukraine –

As they approach the cold winter, residents of a bombed Ukrainian village say they appreciate the warm bath in a mural by graffiti artist Banksy.

The mural, which shows a man rubbing his back in a bathtub, is on the ground floor of what remains of an apartment building hit in a Russian offensive in March in Horynka, northwest of Kyiv, on the front line where Russia’s assault on the capital was. Stop.

“For me, this means washing off all the dirt. The dirt of the Russian Federation…,” Tetyana Reznichenko, 43, told Reuters as snow fell around her. “And this drawing makes me feel as though I have cleansed myself of the dirt that has come upon us.”

The mural is one of seven confirmed Banksy paintings painted in Ukraine. Reznychenko said she gave Banksy’s team a cup of instant coffee in her apartment, as it was cold when the artist came to paint the mural.

She has a wood-burning stove in her apartment but no electricity, heat or running water as it is winter.

“Winter has begun and we don’t know what will happen after that. The firefighters brought us non-potable water … but it will freeze unless we take it inside,” she said.

Despite the problems, she and her neighbors remain united.

“Ukrainians adapt to everything. No light? No problem. There are candles, there are alternative sources of electricity, there are power banks,” said her neighbor Olena Kulenović.

“When neighbors have electricity, we go to them and charge phones and power banks. No water? It’s okay. Even if the government didn’t help, we managed to organize water delivery.”
