ROME – Pope Francis, a lover of classical music, left the Vatican Tuesday night to visit old friends who run a record store in Rome and receive a gift CD.
The visit was to be kept secret, but Javier Martinez-Proal, a reporter for Roma TV news agency, was in the area by chance, filmed it with his smartphone, and posted it on Twitter.
Francis stayed inside the StereoSound record store near the old Pantheon for just over 10 minutes. A Vatican spokesman said Francis went there to bless the shop because it was recently renovated.
Martinez Bruckell told Reuters that the shop’s owners told him that they became friends with the Pope years ago when Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
He was visiting their store to buy records of classical music and CDs when he was in Rome to work at the church and stayed in a house nearby to visit the clergy.
They said they gave the Pope a CD of classical music but refused to be more specific. Francis is known to love Beethoven, Mozart, Bach – and even tango music from his native Argentina.
The video clip showed the Pope dodging bulletproof cars as she left the shop and got into a simple white Fiat 500 with Vatican number plates.
This was not the first time the Pope had visited a store in Rome. In 2015, two years after his election, he ordered a new pair of glasses from an ophthalmologist in Rome.
She was due to be handed over to the Vatican, but he decided to go and pick her up himself.
