The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to postpone the Governor’s Awards ceremony, which awards honorary Academy Awards, due to concerns about the Omicron variant.

An academy spokesperson said Wednesday that new plans will come later. This non-televised but always star-studded event was scheduled for January 15th in Los Angeles.

“Given the uncertainties about the variables, and the impact this can have on our community, we feel this is the best and safest decision for moderators and guests,” the statement said.

Eileen May, Samuel L. Jackson and Liv Ullman were announced earlier this year as the winners of this event. Danny Glover has also been selected as the recipient of the Jane Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The evening party is often packed with the first-list and Oscar nominees.

The Academy canceled the Conservative Awards last year due to the pandemic and presented two humanitarian awards during the Oscars broadcast.

The Governors Awards aren’t the only high-profile event in Hollywood for changing plans in recent days. The Palm Springs International Film Festival also decided to cancel the awards ceremony that was supposed to take place on January 6 and included awards such as Kristen Stewart, Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz.
