LOS ANGELES — Troy Kotsur, the first deaf actor to be nominated for an Academy Award, won Best Supporting for his role in “CODA” at the Academy Awards on Sunday.

Kotsur joins “CODA” actress Marlee Matlin as the only deaf Academy Award winner. Matlin is still the youngest winning actress at the age of 21 for the 1986 drama “The Younger Sons of God”.

The star-studded audience has risen to their feet for Kotsur, a huge favourite, having already won awards from the British Academy Film Awards, SAG, Critics’ Choice, and Independent Spirit. Javier Bardem, Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, and others raised their hands and waved – what’s known as a deaf applause.

Broadcaster Yoon Yeh-jung, winner of last year’s supporting actress, signed kutsur’s name before taking it to the microphone. I handed the Oscar to Kotsur, who then quickly retrieved it, freeing his hands to make his comments in American Sign Language. An interpreter joined them on stage and choked while making kutsur’s remarks.

“It’s amazing to be here on this trip,” Kotsur signed. “I can’t believe I’m here.”

In “CODA,” which symbolizes a deaf adult child, Kostur plays Frank, whose daughter, Ruby, struggles with being the only non-deaf member of her family and the responsibility she feels for them.

Kotsur’s televised speeches at the other shows he’s won have been a highlight of every time, and he hasn’t disappointed in a moment of his life.

“I just wanted to say this is dedicated to the deaf community, the CODA community, the disabled community,” Kotsur signed. “This is our moment.”

The 53-year-old actor from Mesa, Arizona, has worked in the industry for over 30 years. He was grateful for the recognition CODA had given him after years of financial struggle. Kotsur’s career has received a welcome boost as a result of these awards.

Kotsur’s wife, actress Dean Bray, is deaf. Kissed her before heading to the theatre.

Much of kutsur’s career has been spent on the stage. He has appeared in productions of the National Deaf Theater and Deaf Western Theater in Los Angeles.

His TV credits include “The Mandalorian”, “CSI: NY”, “Scrubs” and “Criminal Minds”.

Kotsur won Academy Awards for “Belfast” Kieran Hinds, Jesse Plemons and Cody Smit McPhee for The Power of the Dog, and JK Simmons for Being the Ricardos.
