Described by Time magazine as “clown, genius, edgelord, visionary, industrialist, showman,” Tesla magazine named Tesla CEO Elon Musk as its 2021 Person of the Year.
Musk, the founder and CEO of space exploration company SpaceX, recently surpassed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest person as the price of Tesla pushed his net worth to around $300 billion. He owns about 17% of Tesla’s stock, which sold for nearly $1,000 each on Monday.
Time cited the breadth of Musk’s endeavours, since founding SpaceX in 2002, and even his hand in creating the alternative energy company SolarCity as well as Tesla, the world’s most valuable car company. The magazine asserts that the annual recognition it issues is not an award, but rather “a recognition of the person who has had the greatest impact on the events of the year, good or bad.”
The magazine also noted the influence that Musk wields over an army of loyal followers (and investors) on social media, discrediting the powerful as well as regulators trying to keep an executive on scrutiny away from tradition. Before his 66 million followers on Twitter, he was providing a strange help to the world and even driving his followers and investors crazy with the faltering markets.
Although it has only become profitable in recent years, Tesla is the most valuable car company in the world, having at some point this year crossed the $1 trillion market cap threshold. Detroit heavyweights Ford and General Motors have a combined fortune of less than $200 billion.
Musk said last month that SpaceX would attempt to launch a futuristic bullet-shaped Starship into orbit in January. NASA has contracted SpaceX to use the Starship to deliver astronauts to the lunar surface as early as 2025. Musk said he plans to use reusable ships to eventually land people on Mars.
Time highlighted Musk’s recent admission to his 66 million Twitter followers that half of his tweets were “posted on a porcelain throne.” In her profile on the provocative CEO, it took time to detail one of those Twitter storms in the toilets before concluding: “This is the man who aspires to save our planet and make us a new planet to inhabit.”
