Toronto –

The sexual assault trial of Canadian musician Jacob Hoggard is set to begin after several delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jury selection in the case is expected to begin this morning in downtown Toronto court.

Head Hoggard pleaded not guilty to sexual assault causing bodily harm and sexual interference during a two-day preliminary hearing in the summer of 2019.

He chose to be tried by a jury rather than a judge alone, and was initially scheduled to stand trial in January 2021.

But public health measures aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19 have prompted courts to suspend new jury trials for months at a time during the pandemic, and the trial has been postponed several times.

Work is now scheduled to continue until early June.

Hoggard was arrested and charged in 2018 for alleged incidents involving a woman and a teenager that police said occurred in the Toronto area in 2016. The complainants cannot be identified due to the publication ban.

Police began investigating the case after allegations emerged that Hoggard had inappropriate encounters with young fans.

The singer made a statement long before his arrest in which he denied any non-consensual sexual behaviour. But he admitted that he acted in a way that “makes the woman objective” and was “reckless and indifferent to her feelings”.

Hedley was dropped by her management team and blacklisted by several radio stations after the allegations surfaced, and has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2018.
