MELBOURNE – Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Saturday that hip-hop artist Kanye West will have to be fully vaccinated if he wants to perform in Australia, after media said the artist had planned an Australian tour in March.
The warning comes just two weeks after tennis star Novak Djokovic’s hopes of winning a Grand Slam title were dashed when a court upheld the government’s decision to revoke his visa due to COVID-19 rules and his unvaccinated status.
“The rules are you have to be fully vaccinated,” Morrison told a news conference.
“It applies to everyone, as people have seen it lately. It doesn’t matter who you are, understand the rules. Follow the rules – you can come. You don’t follow the rules, you can’t.”
Morrison’s comments came on the heels of a report in the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday, citing industry sources, who said West planned to hold concerts at a stadium in Australia in March.
Representatives for West, who released his latest album “Donda” in July, were not immediately available for comment.
The vaccination status of West, the 2020 US presidential candidate, is unknown.
In a 2021 interview on social media, he said he received a single dose of the vaccine, but in a 2020 interview with Forbes business magazine, he called vaccination a “sign of the beast.”
Australia, one of the most vaccinated countries against COVID-19, has been battling an explosive wave of infections in the past month driven by the rapidly spreading Omicron variant, with nearly two million cases recorded.
Until then, it had only had 400,000 cases since the epidemic first emerged nearly two years ago.
On Saturday, 97 people died, after the epidemic recorded 98 deaths on Friday. Health officials in several states, however, said hospital admissions were either stabilizing or showing signs of declining.
