Paris, 2022-01-28 20:17:43. ‘Maus’ sales soar after book ban in Tennessee
NEW YORK — Just days after a Tennessee school district banned “Maus” from publishing national news, two versions of Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust reached the top 20 on Amazon.com and are in limited supply.
“Maus” ranked 12th on Amazon early Friday night, and wasn’t available for delivery until mid-February. It was “The Complete Maus” which includes a second volume, #9 and is out of stock.
Neither book was in the top 1000 at the start of the week.
Earlier this month, the McMinn County School Board in Tennessee voted to remove the word “mouse” due to “inappropriate language” and an illustration of a nude woman, according to board meeting minutes. Spiegelmann’s 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography tells of his father’s experiences as a Holocaust survivor.
The council’s decision came amid a flurry of Conservative-sponsored legislation and other measures to withdraw books from schools, with other banned acts including Toni Morrison’s “Blue Eye” and Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
