Paris, 2022-03-17 08:17:01. Miss World crowned amid calls for peace in Ukraine

Poland’s Karolina Bilawska was crowned the 70th Miss World on Wednesday, as contestants and organizers expressed their solidarity with Ukrainians during a candlelight ceremony on stage at the televised conclusion.

Beluska, who works as a model and is studying for her master’s degree, took the title in Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, three months after the competition was postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Miss USA, Shri Saini, took second place, while Olivia Yasi from Ivory Coast took second place.

In addition to the usual performances and live judging, the captivating ceremony included messages of support for Ukraine after the unprovoked Russian invasion of the country, which shares a border with Poland. In one of the clips, Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica, who won the Miss World title in 2019, sang Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli “The Prayer” as he was on stage and in the audience holding candles high.

The phrase “Pray for Peace” appeared on a screen behind the finalists. The official Miss World account on Twitter tweeted that the show was part of the competition’s efforts to “stand by Ukraine”. Organizers also said that more than 7,000 candles were prepared for the fair, which has been broadcast in more than 100 countries.

In a statement released ahead of the competition, the CEO of Miss World Ltd. , Julia Morley: “We must do something, even if it doesn’t seem like it’s enough to light one candle, if we all light a candle together, we can change the world”, calling on people all over the world to “highlight Ukraine” and post pictures on social media. .

Earlier this week, the organizers of Miss World published a video message from Miss Ukraine 2016, Oleksandra Kucherenko. Against the background of hypothetical footage from the conflict, countries around the world appealed to “our support, to close the skies over Ukraine and save the world (from) nuclear disaster,” adding: “Our peace is your peace.”

The organization said the current Miss Ukraine, Oleksandra Yaremchuk, who did not qualify for the final event, is currently in Kyiv.

The Miss World pageant, initially scheduled for December, was postponed after several people associated with the event – including 23 of 97 contestants – tested positive for Covid-19 just days ago.

Only 40 semi-finalists were invited back to Wednesday’s re-arranged event, which was hosted by English singer and TV personality Peter Andre and Mexican singer and actor Fernando Allende.

Preliminary competitions had already been held by that time, with Yacé the winner of the Top Model part being chosen for the Queen, Mongolian actor Burte-Ujin Anu winning the Miss World Talent content and Mexico’s Karolina Vidales named Miss World Sports.
