Paris, 2022-03-27 08:21:32. Oscars: Canadian film talent competes in multiple categories
It’s a big night for Canadian Oscar nominees competing in categories including production design, documentaries, makeup and hairstyling.
Among the highlights is Montreal-based writer, director, and producer Denis Villeneuve, whose epic sci-fi thriller “Dune” has the second highest number of nominations after The Power of the Dog with 10. It has won awards in Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture categories.
Also for “Dune,” Montrealers Donald Mowat and Patrice Vermette are on hand for the best makeup, hairstyling, and best production styling, respectively.
Meanwhile, Canadian group Nightmare Alley largely earned nominations for Saskatoon-born Tamara Deverell and Halifax’s Shane View for Best Production Design, Toronto’s Luis Sequeira for Best Costume Design and Toronto Producer J. Miles Dell for Best Picture alongside Mexican director Guillermo del Toro.
Montreal-based producer Roger Frapper is also poised for Best Picture alongside the cast of The Power of the Dog, which leads with 12 nominations.
The Academy Awards are broadcast tonight on ABC and CTV.
In the nomination for Best Documentary Short Film, there are two Canadian contenders: Halifax filmmaker Ben Braudfoot and his “Queen of Basketball,” and Toronto producer Jeff McClain for “Oudible.”
In the Best Animated Short Film category is the National Council of Canadian/British Films co-production ‘Art Matters’.
The party unfolds amid controversy over the decision of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to offer eight awards ahead of the three-hour live TV broadcast in an effort to keep the broadcasts “more compact and efficient” for viewers.
These categories include short documentaries, film editing, makeup and hair styling, original score, production design, short animation, short live action, and sound.
Several filmmakers criticized the move, including Proudfoot, who said the decision “degrades certain categories,” and NFB, who predicted it would “further marginalize short films, which are already struggling to find large audiences.”
These winning presentations and speeches will be edited and broadcast later during the live broadcast.
Canadian stars Elliott Page, Shawn Mendes and Simo Liu are also scheduled to co-star, while Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall and Amy Schumer will be the first official hosts of the Academy Awards since 2018.
