L.A, 2022-03-10 14:16:00. Quebec’s summer music festival faces backlash for not including female artists
A summer music festival in Quebec with a lineup of men has been criticized for not including any female artists.
The backlash began online, and then famous singer-songwriter Émile Belleaudo announced that he was pulling out of the 16th edition of Festi-Plage de Cap-d’Espoir, on the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec.
Bilodo said on Wednesday that not only artists, but everyone in the music industry, including festival organizers, have a role to play in increasing women’s representation and that they cannot participate in an event that does not share their values.
Festi-Plage, taking place July 27-30, is set to feature a variety of musical genres, including Quebec folk, rap and funk.
The 14 featured acts are all-male – except for Les Cowboys Fringants, a four-person band with a female member.
Festival organizer Jeslyn Peter said in an interview today that he was disappointed with Bilodo’s reaction and surprised by the criticism.
Peter says he hasn’t been able to find a single female musician or band that has a musical style that goes with the festival.
