Rogers Saga: 'Succession' star Brian Cox's engraving message

Sydney, 2022-01-12 09:52:00. Rogers Saga: ‘Succession’ star Brian Cox’s engraving message

Actor Brian Cox recorded a video message to Rogers Communications president Edward Rogers congratulating him on his “real-life succession” after a months-long discussion of the company’s leadership.

In the letter, Cox, who plays ruthless media mogul Logan Roy, compares Rogers’ fight to the popular HBO comedy-drama. The 19-second video was sent via a paid message on the video platform Cameo, but users of the site can also access it.

“Edward. This is from Susan,” Cox says in the video, referring to Edward’s wife. “Congratulations on your real-life succession at Rogers Communications. Also, after Joe Natale beat this issue.”

Rogers Communications named Tony Staveri as permanent president and CEO on Monday. Staviri replaced his former chief financial officer, Joe Natale, who left the company in November amid a family fight between Edward Rogers and his mother and two sisters over who should lead the company.

The feud began after Edward, the only son of the company’s late founder Ted Rogers, tried to dump Natalie as CEO in September 2021, saying he had lost faith in Natale’s ability to lead the company through the acquisition of smaller rival Shaw Communications Inc.

A British Columbia Supreme Court judge eventually sided with Edward attempting to replace a total of five directors who defied his efforts to make unilateral changes in the company.

In Cameo’s message, Cox gave the camera a quick thumbs up before congratulating Edward on the “well done” job.

The Cameo video platform allows fans to purchase personalized video messages with specific instructions from celebrities. Cameo video messages from Cox start at CAD 868.

“The video was shared with Edward as a practical joke,” a spokesperson for Edward Rogers told CTV News.

“He was not the author and was unaware of the review on Mr. Cox’s Cameo page,” the spokesperson said in an email on Wednesday.

CTVNews.ca has reached out to Rogers Communications for comment on the video, but has not received a response at press time.

HBO’s “Succession” depicts Roy’s adult children as they fight and stab each other for control of their elderly father’s media conglomerate. The series has often been compared to Rogers Communications’ real-life family drama.
