Sydney, 2022-08-10 19:10:56. Young Thug faces new charges in RICO . case
Atlanta rapper Young Thug, accused of conspiring to break Georgia’s Rico law and participating in a street criminal gang, faces six new criminal charges along with four others connected to the case.
A new indictment was filed in Fulton County Superior Court last week against the artist, whose real name is Jeffrey Williams. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that he now faces additional charges of participating in street criminal gang activity, violation of Georgia’s Controlled Substances Act, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, machine gun possession, and drug charges.
Authorities said the new charges stem from what investigators found during Williams’ arrest in the original indictment on May 9 at his home in the upscale Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta.
The initial indictment included 56 counts against 28 people for their alleged involvement in crimes committed on behalf of the Young Slime Life Street gang. The updated indictment now contains 65 counts, six of which apply to Williams.
At the time of Williams’ arrest, there was a question as to whether the new charges would be incorporated into the RICO case. Court records now indicate that this has been accomplished.
Williams’ attorney, Brian Steele, said his client is innocent and looks forward to fighting the charges in court.
“Mr. Williams has never committed any crimes,” Steele told the newspaper on Wednesday. “We can’t wait for the trial date.”
Williams, along with rapper Jonah, whose real name is Sergio Kitchens, remains in prison after rejecting the bonds of both earlier this year. Steele said a new bond hearing is scheduled for Williams next week. An initial beta date has been set for January 9, 2023.
Martinez-Arnold, aka Duke, and Demonte Kendrick, aka Yak Gotti, face additional charges including participation in street criminal gang activity, violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, possession of a firearm while committing a felony and possession of a machine gun. Kendrick has also been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Shannon Stillwell and Quamaradi Nichols are indicted for one additional count of firearm possession by a convicted felon in connection with Schimmel’s death for drinks on March 18.
Arnold’s attorney, Ashley Merchant, told WSB-TV she was confident her client would not be indicted. She said he will plead not guilty to the new charges because he is already on the original charges
The indictments center around Young Slime Life, and prosecutors say an alleged gang that Williams and two others he founded in Atlanta have links to the national Bloods gang.
Young Thug co-wrote “This is America” with Childish Gambino, and made history when he became the first hip-hop song to win Song of the Year Grammy in 2019.
